FEMS was founded in 1974. Currently, FEMS has 52 Member Societies from 36 European countries which links around 30 000 microbiologists.
To facilitate the exchange of microbiological knowledge, FEMS publishes five journals, organises a biennial congress of microbiologists and initiates campaigns such as the European Academy of Microbiology (EAM) and European Microbiology Forum (EMF).
FEMS also provides funding for early career scientists and organisers of microbiology-related events
